Just when you think you have come to the end of the earth, a magnificent city appears: Punta Arenas (Sandy Point), with its houses bearing brightly painted rooftops, and roofs happily interrupt the winter snow and the intense blue of this southern sea.
This region provides endless places to visit and marvel at. From dramatic sites such as Fuerte Bulnes (Fort Bulnes) and Puerto del Hambre (Hunger Port) to delicate and seductive spots such as Magdalena Island or the Penguin Colonies at the Seno Otway where over 6,000 Magellan penguins flock.
For centuries, Punta Arenas has been a haven for bold sailors from around the globe, who originally came in the search of new territories and commercial trading routes and then faced the renowned and feared fury of Cape Horn. Those who survived arrived to the Strait of Magellan, an inter-oceanic, 583-kilometre canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and separating the American continent from Tierra del Fuego.
